Ulu means on the top or on highest level and Watu means the stone or rock.
Uluwatu temple means the temple located on the top or on the high level of the stone, on this case is the lime stone.
Uluwatu Temple located at Pecatu Village, south side of Bali Island, about 26 Kilometers from Kuta Beach. To get this place, try to go before 1 - 2 pm because after 3 pm it will be crazy traffic from Jimbaran until Pecatu down town. This temple is located about 97 meters on top of cliff by the sea. You can see the sunset from this temple. But be aware, so many smart bad monkeys around here, they could steal or take away the goods on you such as camera, sun glasses, slippers, hat and they can take away the think inside your bag. But if the monkey stolen your camera, report immediately to the temple security to get it back, but no guarantee cause the monkey could eat/bite your camera
The temple was built by Mpu Kuturan in 9th AD. Other people claim the temple was built by Dang Hyang Nirartha (Hindu monk) from Daha Kingdom (East Java Island). He came to Bali in 1546 AD, on the spiritual journey around Bali, he also built the Tanah Lot Temple and all the temples on south of Bali area until finally he died in Bali.
To visit uluwatu temple, must wear sarong (provide in temple) for those people who wear short, wear scarf for those people who wear long dress/long skirt. The ticket entrance for the temple is IDR 50k/person for adult, children pay less.
Everyday there is kecak dance performance here, start from 6 pm until 7 pm. You have to pay 100k/person for the entrance ticket. If you interest to see this dance, you must be here at 5 pm and when you arrive at uluwatu temple as soon as possible you have to ask your driver to buy your ticket otherwise sold out.
Tanah Lot Temple
Tanah lot means the land in the sea. Located at west of canggu or about 21 Kilometers from kuta beach. If you want to visit tanah lot temple, you'd better start to go in early morning, 7 am or 8 am because after 9 am the traffic will be more crazy specially the road at near canggu and you will spend more than 1 hour to reach this temple. But for sure, you will get traffic when you go back to kuta.
What you can see at tanah lot temple? If you visit at afternoon, you can enjoy the sunset from 6 pm for 20 minutes. They are also available the kecak dance start from 6 - 7 pm. Under the temple there is a cave that you can pray for blessing. Inside the cave pour out the natural fresh holly water and this water accommodated by stone water container. The Hindu people believe that this water is prosperity water and could healing bad luck.
Padang-padang beach located just 15 minutes before uluwatu temple. This is the clean and beautiful beach for the surfer, sun bath and sun burn. It is a good beach for swim and learn surfing for beginner.
